Bridge Building ...

I wish to pick the readership's brains.

As part of the Brunel 200 celebrations there is to be a family construction day on Saturday afternoon, and I'm doing the interactive bit with the kids ('cos the other person doing it would just do a (rather adult style) powerpoint presentation to them ....). So 've been thinking about bridges (both brunel and other) to raise in this bit.

Hmm you might think this is a bit like what she's up to in Canada soon, and you'd be right ... 'cos I'm using this as a ideas/ run through session before doing the tweaked version with the yellow blobs after half term. Mind you I've already got some bit from the previous presentation that I can use for the older age group at the camp.

So my question to the readership .... when you think of bridges (esp. Canadian/ Brunel) which bridges do you think of? Answers in the comments box asap!

In addition to Ed's list... Millennium bridge in London, Tower Bridge, Oresund bridge (between Sweden and Denmark), the bridge over the Forth or Firth (or whatever it's called!)

When I think of Bridges, I think of
Lloyd Bridges (okay, so he was American, not Canadian). There are also his son Beau and 'The Dude' Jeff (also Americans).

I'm intrigued as to what "a (rather adult style) powerpoint presentation" might involve!

Hmm good suggestions, I think I managed to get most of them in, but forgot about Oresund so that might make it in. Got both Tyne & Syndey harbour (as they are similar). I think even my winking eye bridge pic (current work comp wallpaper) from SAGGA Summer Camp might make an appearance!

My Canada ones stop at 2 ... Capilano Suspension (ped in a forest) & Confederation Bridge (between New Brunswick & PEI).

As for the presentation bit ... imagine your average dull work powerpoint presentation, but then try to make it a bit kid friendly (mainly with shorter words) and then have it presented by a person more used to presenting to adults ... hence with me going on auto pilot yellow blob style presentation (although I will use powerpoint/ projector, to make the pictures easy to do instead of A3 bits of paper like at Brownies).

I've managed to source some 'Little Book of Civilisation' locally (having just ordered a load & some 'Insite' to be shipped out to Canada soon, so getting the subs worth this year). I don't think they used these for previous things like this in schools for a recent local bridge project.

Crossed fingers it all goes well on Saturday .... we shall see.

Oh and on my hit list of Brunel Bridges:
Clifton, Royal Albert (Tamar Rail), Maidenhead Rail (good brick arch example). As Clr says the one they uncovered is only interesting to us Civils ...
The other ones I've got pics of so far are; Tyne, Syndey Harbour, QEII (Dartford/Thames), Golden Gate, Both Severn Xings, Tower Bridge, Brooklyn, Firth of Forth Rail, Britannia & Menai ....

D'oh ... that'll be the bridge I've just been looking at photos of from our hols last summer.

So Rainbow Bridge is added to the Candian Bridge list.

Maybe its because I'm a white blooded Yorkie, but the ones that come to me are the Humber, Crown Point (in Leeds) and Tinsley Viaduct (think M1 building site near Sheffield!). But as an open minded Civil Engineering type person that I sometimes pretend to be, I also think of ones like the Rion-Antirrion Bridge (Greece) and the Millau Viaduct (even if it is a FOSTER!). Bridges were one of my few strong points at uni. Well apart from Groundworks but you already know that story...

Hmm there are quite few Covered Bridges/ Kissing Bridges in the area of Ontario near where we'll be (due to a Mennonite population who built lots of them). (that's what Andy is referring to when talking of garages.

They have one in Quebec (we drove through it, 'cos my sister wanted to do that one last time on the way back to Montreal when she left Gaspe). They are called Kissing Bridges because courting couple used to meet on them to kiss, as due to being covered you couldn't see the kissing unless in the bridge.
