Alas we have followed many a Local Government re-organisation and have lost the Engineer bit …..
We are now the Engineeringless ‘Directorate of Environment and Transport’ .. no wonder ICE have trouble promoting what a Civil Engineer is … I won’t start on the whole ‘Engineer’ argument/ rant, suffice to say we don’t fix your heating!
With the retirement of the City Engineer a couple of weeks back yet another of a dying breed left the arena. I wonder how many City/ County Engineers there are still left? I suspect precious few, they are all probably now called Directors of Environment/ Transport/ Development …
DET doesn’t quite has the same ring a EDS (usually pronounced ed’s), I suspect that this wing will be in mourning for a while with this passing, as instructed by e-mail yesterday. No flowers please, Donations to ICE/ IHIE/ IMechE, in the hope that the children of today will know what an Engineer is. Please allow time for all those who sailed on the good ship EDS to use up all the old stationary there may still be left.
