"Currently, future subsidies for farmers will depend on land use at
the end of only this year, and as it stands, orchards will receive
significantly less money than open farm land. Thus, unless this policy
is changed, many farmers will have little economic choice but to grub up
their orchards. The impact on decent cider and perry production could be
huge."

Not to mention the apple orchards of my beloved East Kent ....
