Shopping ...

A sort of shopping ethical dilemma will be upon me by next week. You see a Tesco Express is due to open near us on the 23rd and it will be our nearest major convenience shop (there is a Spar just down the road but it has a limited stock).

Now I have concerns of the whole Tesco takeover that is happening across the country. That said at Winter Weekend I had to an escape for some essential supplies I wasn’t sure of late on Friday and we ended up at a more controversial Tesco Express in Brockenhurst. You see the Brockenhurst one used to be a local affair run by the same family for years, then recently Tesco took it over and Tescoified it. They’ve been on the news and have had to tone down the Tesconess to be in keeping with the surroundings. At least our new store doesn’t have this scenario as it was previously a Tool Hire place and then derelict for a while (whether Tesco had it then I don’t know), but it will obviously compete with 2 Co-ops (Portsmouth seems to have nearly as many Co-ops as Offies) very close by along with Lidl just down the road.

Mind you I know that I certainly won’t be visiting it around footie match time as its located opposite the end of 2 streets leading to Fratton Park (and yes it does look as if the place will be selling alcohol).

We shall see how the Tesco domination of the country enters our little part of Portsmouth in due course .. in the meantime I’ll look in Lidl first and then go to Tesco if I’m that way.

I had few qualms about Tesco taking over Dillons (the newsagents not the bookshop) and converting Dillons/One Stop/Supercigs brancges as it was merely one big chain taking over another. It's another thing seeing independant stores being swallowed up.
