'The Games'
For those of you with better things to amuse yourself with, you may not have been watching ‘The Games’. Now this is a bit Big Brotherish; once you watch a bit you find yourself being drawn in each night … At least this year there is a reason to watch in the form of Mr Chief Scout aka Peter Duncan.
Speaking as a Guider (but of the PD era of BP agewise) I have to say he’s done a mighty fine job of ‘do your best’ at the events which it seems have been well supported by various uniformed members of The Scout Association (as shown on the TV coverage, some cubs/ beavers had front row seats on the gym night for the men’s vault (where alas PD did a his worst, and then felt bad about that fact)). Oh to have a public face to GGUK like this, yep our equivalent PRwise is the President (aka Sophie Wessex), but she hardly likely to don a leotard in the name of TV anytime soon! Its also pleasing to see that PD’s charity is TSA (and so it should be!) as I often feel that the general public forget that GGUK & TSA are Charities … meanwhile it seems we do have lots of other celebrities choosing ‘trendy’ charities that make them look good (my opinion, sorry if it offends). LOL on Wed night’s coverage where PD & JK (a Radio 1 DJ) swapped clothes after Tuesday’s event which also included a Scout international necker, which later was still being worn … It also seems that PD has also become a fav of the group as everyone gets on well with him, while this has a lot to do with personality. Whatever your views of him as Chief Scout are, I feel that his participation in this TV programme has done the Scouts no harm so far, lets hope there’s lots of positive feedback (be it leaders/members/money) because of it.
Hmm going back to thoughts of Peter Duncan and Blue Peter …. I wonder if the Rainbow Guider back home has considered moving to the dark side (TSA) so she can have PD as her chief? You see back when I was Brown Owl (in Kent) there was a gaggle of us all in the same school year, therefore of the PD era of BP. He did the panto one year (prob. ‘98 or ’99) down in the wilds of Canterbury which we attended as a district. So while the Guides were getting excited about that year’s Neighbours star the YGs (for we were all that young) were getting all excited about Peter Duncan being there! LOL the rainbow guider (having had prompt parents) then hovered at the stage door .. and got his autograph (and yes, we did tease her for a while!). The Guides just didn’t get why we were excited about an ex-BP presenter as they didn’t think BP was at all cool, the Brownies just took it in their stride of things about (young) Brown Owl (to differentiate me from the sister unit Brown owl I was the ‘young’ one, the old one having been my Brown Owl) and just thought I must be really old.
