Boom, boom, boom.

In the words of Baldrick, in Blackadder goes Forth. Boom, boom, boom.

Hertfordshire its seems is not the place to be at this moment in time. That’s why my sister was there Sunday morning, post wedding on the Saturday in Hitchin. My mum & dad got woken up at 6am in East Kent, so mum suspected my sister and hubby probably got a nice early alarm call whether they wanted it or not! (Neither are early risers). The wedding was of another uni-mate (her’s was the first of a gaggle it seems) this time her boyf for most of uni it seemed, now her ex. Despite being her ex they still get on really well (he was the saviour at her wedding going back for her bouquet that she forgot!), as does the ex and her hubby. Last month it was a former housemate’s wedding for her in Somerset. We also suspected that many of the wedding guest proabably had to take a 'scenic route' to head home, with the closure of the M1.

So it seems my sister’s 2005 was much like my 2004 in that it was a wedding fest year (last year the only wedding she attended was her own!).

In the meantime … Dr T still advocating the wonders of living in sin (although I did spy some nice rings in Chichester on Saturday, both diamond solitaires … in one of my favourite jewellery shops). He didn’t get the hint, despite the bangla girls wishing for another wedding get together!

Going back to the start of this post, and the Blackadder goes forth series, we’ve been watching ‘Not Forgotton’ on Channel 4. In my view it’s a really interesting series, tracing back the names on war memorials for the First World War to living relatives. They’ve taken an area to look at each week and explored the lives of about 4 or 5 people. As for the Blackadder series, although it was comedy I feel that it actually grasped some of the way life was in the trenches. I still remember having an assembly at school on the last part of the programme in the last episode, when they finally went ‘over the top’. For those who don’t remember, the series ended with you seeing them go over, get shot, fall and then the field morphed into a field of poppies. It was a simple but evocative ending. The assembly was given by one of the history teachers (who looked like Dr Spock), I can’t remember it really other than us all watching the ending in silence in the assembly, despite many of us older pupils having watched it when it was aired. The Blackadder crew had got the balance right you had the comedy whilst maintaining the due respect for the many soldiers that died as part of ‘The Great War’.

My memory may be faulty but I don't remember them all getting shot. I mean I don't remember seeing it. As I remember they go over the top there is a lot of noise and flashing, and they run/stagger about in slow motion choaos which fades to a field of poppies.

Of course it would be fascile to believe that they didn't all die horribly.

Maybe they didn't shot ... but the gist of that happening was there.

It was the only episode of Blackadder designed to be unfunny, which was probably why most people remember it. I can't remember anyone being shot, but (to change tack ever so slightly) you can shoot people full of bullets in the A-Team and no-one spills blood. Mind you in the A-Team you also can use duck tape as a substitute for butt welds without any loss of structural stiffness...
