Hmm

I had a giggle over this when Dr T passed on this link … to me from the Leader of the Council to Gordon Brown on becoming PM. Of particular amusement was item 2, Climate Change.

…. Hmm so the whole island sinking under the waves isn’t an important aspect of climate change for the city? But the solution? Its to put solar panels and wind turbines up on properties… Err, wind turbines? Aren’t those really inefficient unless you live on a hill with a decent wind, but we live on a primarily flat island with usually just the onshore winds bringing us significant wind speeds… so wind turbines aren’t really a solution unless we line the top of Portsdown Hill with the things.

Wind turbines do indeed need to be in a good flow of air, if you want one chez Caz the DTI estimate you need to stick it 25m above ground level to get the minimum 6m/s speed to make it just about worthwhile. (see Here for the wind speed data) Even Ports Down hill doesn't score much better in the windyness stakes...

Hmm seeing as Chez Caz is probably at +5m if I'm lucky (its just out the blue of the EA flood zone map) I'd need a 20m pole with it on. Can't see many people getting planning permission for 20m masts...
